Foto Marvellini è il collettivo formato da Andrea e Carlo Marvellini, con base a Milano. Amici da decenni, nel 2011 iniziano il loro primo progetto artistico congiunto mettendo in comune i propri interessi culturali, oltre alle rispettive tecniche preferite (Andrea l’installazione, Carlo la fotografia).
Nel progetto incarnano due fratelli, discendenti da una mitica famiglia di fotografi milanesi, i Marvellini appunto, dal quale derivano anche i loro pseudonimi. Foto Marvellini rappresenta un amorevole tributo alla fotografia dall’Ottocento agli inizi del secolo successivo. Con linguaggio perturbante, tra il familiare e il fantastico, il collettivo declina il tema del “falso” nella fotografia, gioca con l’assurdo, celebra le tecniche passate, crea credibili antenati e fedeli post-mortem. Con i loro lavori, volutamente “ingannevoli”, Foto Marvellini invita lo spettatore a ricordare che le immagini in genere, per loro natura, scatenano e danno forma alle sue emozioni e alla sua comprensione del mondo. Le opere fine-art a tiratura limitata sono realizzate dal duo su carte baritate stampate in camera oscura, spesso trattate con procedimenti chimici studiati per antichizzare i supporti senza incidere sui sali d’argento del supporto. Di alcuni soggetti realizzano anche multipli a tiratura aperta (“Marvellini readytohang”), ma sempre montati in cornici vintage originali.
Foto Marvellini is the collective fouded by Andrea and Carlo Marvellini, based in Milan (IT). Friends for decades, they started their first joint artistic project in 2011, sharing their cultural interests, as well as their respective preferred techniques (Andrea the installations, Carlo photography).
In the project they embody two brothers, descendants of a legendary family of Milanese photographers, the Marvellini family, from which also derive their pseudonyms. Foto Marvellini is a loving tribute to photography from the 19th century to the beginning of 20th. With perturbing language, somewhere between the familiar and the fantastic, the collective declines the theme of the ‘fake’ in photography, plays with the absurd, celebrates past techniques, creates credible ancestors and faithful post-mortems. With their deliberately “deceptive” works, Foto Marvelli invites the viewer to remember that images in general, by nature, trigger and shape his emotions and his understanding of the world. The limited edition fine-art works are produced on baryte paper printed in darkroom, often treated with a chemical processes that antique the supports without affecting the silver salts of the support. Of some subjects they also produce multiples (“Marvellini readytohang”), but always mounted in original vintage frames.
